Not All Fishing Hook Specifications Use the Same Heat Treatment Parameters

For fishing hooks with finer wire diameters, more attention needs to be paid to the product condition during heating and heat treatment to avoid increased brittleness caused by improper processing. 2 Heat Treatment Machines for Heating and Cooling

As a professional fishing hook manufacturer, our heat treatment workshop is equipped with 2 heat treatment machines for fishing hook heat treatment production.

After the fishing hooks enter the equipment, they are first heated. Once the corresponding process requirements are reached, the products are immediately cooled. Our heat treatment equipment and cooling process are integrated, rather than transferring the fishing hooks to another machine for cooling after heating is completed.

This reduces intermediate transfer and also makes it easier to control the heat treatment cycle during production.

During actual production, we arrange the corresponding treatment method according to the material and wire diameter of the fishing hooks. For mass-produced products, stable equipment conditions and a consistent production process are very important. Since the quantity of fishing hooks is large, if there are significant differences in the treatment condition among products within the same batch, this will directly affect the consistency of the finished products.

Tempering Is Required After Cooling

After the fishing hooks have undergone heat treatment and cooling, the heat treatment process is not yet complete.

The next step is tempering.

Although quenched steel can achieve relatively high hardness, it also develops corresponding internal stresses. If quenching is performed without proper tempering, the fishing hooks may exhibit greater brittleness during subsequent use.

Therefore, tempering is a very important process in fishing hook heat treatment.

Our workshop is equipped with 4 tempering machines, and different fishing hook specifications are arranged for tempering according to the production schedule.

One important factor is the wire diameter of the fishing hook.

Different wire diameters require different tempering times. It cannot simply be assumed that all fishing hooks should use the same tempering time. Fishing hooks with larger and smaller wire diameters have different conditions after heat treatment, so the corresponding tempering time needs to be arranged according to the actual specifications.

This is also a point that is easily overlooked in fishing hook production.

Why Do Fishing Hooks Need Tempering After Heat Treatment?

Simply put, quenching is mainly used to achieve the required hardness, while tempering is used to adjust the metallurgical condition after quenching so that the fishing hook achieves a more suitable balance between hardness and toughness.

For fishing hooks, pursuing hardness alone is not the ultimate goal.

During use, fishing hooks need to withstand sudden impact and continuous tensile forces. For example, after a large fish is hooked, the fishing hook will be subjected to significant pulling forces. If the fishing hook has hardness but lacks toughness, it may fracture under high loads.

Conversely, if the fishing hook is too soft, although it is less likely to fracture in a brittle manner, it may deform or even straighten under high tensile forces.

Therefore, during production, we need to adjust the heat treatment and tempering processes according to the product specifications rather than simply pursuing a higher hardness value.

Tempering Time Also Differs for Fishing Hooks with Different Wire Diameters

We pay close attention to fishing hook wire diameter during actual production.

For example, some fishing hooks with finer wire diameters have a smaller cross-sectional area, so their heating conditions during heat treatment differ from those of products with larger wire diameters. For coarse-wire fishing hooks, as the material thickness increases, the process of heat entering and being released also changes.

Therefore, during tempering, we arrange the corresponding treatment time according to the actual wire diameter of the fishing hooks.

This is why, within the same fishing hook production process, not all products can simply use exactly the same tempering parameters.

For factories that have been producing fishing hooks for a long time, much of the process experience does not come from a single fixed parameter table. Instead, it is gradually accumulated through different materials, different specifications, and long-term mass production.

Tensile Testing After Tempering to Check Hardness and Toughness

After tempering is completed, we also perform tensile testing on the fishing hooks and combine it with hardness testing to inspect the products after heat treatment.

Tensile testing is mainly used to observe how the fishing hooks perform when subjected to tensile force, checking whether the hook body can withstand the corresponding load requirements and whether it deforms or fractures after reaching a certain tensile force. Through testing, we can more directly determine whether the toughness and overall strength of the heat-treated fishing hooks meet the product requirements.

At the same time, we perform hardness testing on the fishing hooks. Hardness and toughness are not necessarily better when they are higher. Fishing hooks need to maintain an appropriate balance according to their specific application. Insufficient hardness can cause the fishing hook to deform easily under load; excessive hardness combined with insufficient toughness may cause brittle fracture under high impact forces.

Therefore, tensile testing and hardness testing after tempering are important steps in evaluating the effectiveness of the heat treatment process.

For bulk orders, we conduct corresponding inspections according to the product specifications and customer requirements, promptly identifying potential problems in the heat treatment process and preventing non-conforming products from entering subsequent surface treatment and finished-product packaging processes.

Pickling Is Also Required After Heat Treatment

After tempering and testing are completed, the fishing hooks still need to enter the subsequent surface treatment process.

Before entering surface treatment, we carry out pickling.

Pickling is mainly used to remove surface residues generated on the fishing hooks during the previous processing and heat treatment stages, making the hook surface more suitable for subsequent treatment.

Our pickling process uses degreasing powder for treatment.

After pickling, the fishing hooks enter the subsequent surface treatment process. This allows the previous heat treatment process to connect more effectively with the subsequent surface treatment process.

Therefore, our fishing hook production process does not end with heat treatment and directly proceed to finished products. Instead, it is:

Sharpening → Forming → Heat Treatment → Cooling → Tempering → Tensile and Hardness Testing → Pickling → Surface Treatment

Each process has its own purpose, and the processes before and after are also interconnected.

Heat Treatment Stability Directly Affects Mass Production

For small-batch samples, it may be easy to identify a problem with a single fishing hook.

However, for export orders and mass production, the real challenge is ensuring consistency across the entire batch.

For example, if there are significant differences in the heat treatment condition within the same batch of fishing hooks, even if the dimensions are exactly the same, their actual hardness, toughness, and performance under load may still differ during use.

Therefore, during mass production, we place greater emphasis on production process stability.

After the fishing hooks have completed heat treatment, tempering, and relevant performance testing, they still require subsequent inspection.

We inspect the appearance, dimensions, and post-heat-treatment condition of the fishing hooks according to product requirements. For mass-produced products, we also conduct corresponding performance testing according to production requirements.

The final performance of a fishing hook is not determined by a single process.

From the steel material, sharpening, and forming at the beginning to heat treatment, tempering, and surface treatment at later stages, each process can affect the final product.

Therefore, if a customer requires customized fishing hooks, when confirming the product specifications, we also need to understand the fishing hook material, wire diameter, hook type, and application. Only after these details are confirmed can the production process be determined more accurately.

Fishing hook heat treatment may appear to be just one process in the production flow, but it actually connects the forming of the fishing hook with the subsequent surface treatment.
