How Treble Hooks Are Welded: Causes and Solutions for Uneven Hook Angles and Inconsistent Hook Point Heights

The Treble Hook is the most frequently used Fishing Hook on hard lures. When targeting predatory fish, the strike force is stronger, which requires treble hooks to have higher strength than ordinary hooks. Therefore, welding quality is especially important to the strength of a treble hook. This article explains how treble hooks are welded, as well as the causes and solutions for uneven hook angles and inconsistent hook point heights.

Common Treble Hook Welding Methods

The commonly used welding methods are high-frequency welding and flame brazing. High-frequency welding provides fast heating for hooks with smaller wire diameters, while flame brazing is required for larger wire diameter treble hooks. The following are the welding methods used for different treble hook specifications.

Normal wire diameter treble hooks use high-frequency welding for the following sizes:

16#, 14#, 12#, 10#, 8#, 6#, 4#, 2#, 1#

All treble hooks above 4X strength use flame brazing.

Treble Hook Welding Procedure

1. Use a positioning fixture to accurately position the three hook blanks and secure them on the center shaft.

2. Preheat the treble hook assembly to approximately 750°C–850°C.

3. Apply brazing flux to the copper brazing rod. If the copper brazing rod does not hold the flux, slightly preheat the rod. Around 200°C is sufficient for the flux to adhere.

4. Position the prepared copper brazing rod at the welding area of the treble hook. While heating, rotate the positioning fixture continuously so that the molten brazing filler metal flows evenly into the gaps between the three hooks.

5. After welding is completed, release the positioning fixture and place the treble hook aside for cooling.

Causes and Solutions for Uneven Treble Hook Angles

1. The operator did not properly install the three hook blanks, causing misalignment.

Solution:

New operators should receive no less than 80 hours of training.

2. The positioning fixture itself does not have equal angle spacing.

Solution:

Purchase a new positioning fixture machined in a single CNC process.

3. The positioning fixture has been used for too long, resulting in angle deviation.

Solution:

Each positioning fixture has a strict service life.

Positioning fixtures used for treble hooks below size 1# should be replaced after 800 operating hours.

Positioning fixtures used for treble hooks size 1# and above should be replaced after 600 operating hours.

Causes and Solutions for Inconsistent Treble Hook Point Heights

1. The three hook blanks are not identical during the forming process.

Solution:

Use the same forming die set and the same forming machine to produce all three hook blanks. This ensures consistent hook blank profiles and dimensions.

2. The positioning fixture does not have a locating plate, causing the operator to place the three hook blanks at different heights.

Solution:

Replace the fixture without a locating plate with a fixture equipped with a locating plate (as shown below).
